CANT JOIN EWA NETWORK FOR SICK PAYOUTS, ETC!

Good morning everybody. Remember when I was considering posting a series of blog posts about how to better yourself on a social aspect and on a communication level? We were going to call it “Hacking The Brain.” Guess what? Today, on my 29th birthday will be my first post.

So, we are talking about the Network Method today and with this I wanted to seriously bring up a conversation that I had with you all over a couple of years ago about networking.

The relevance of networking couldn’t be any stronger now. The case being a businessperson in this depressed economy is going to demand that you start breaking your comfort levels and start networking with the community at a level you probably had never experienced.

But you are probably thinking, “Tom, I am not a people person, and I really am afraid to talk to people.” I really hate to say this, but you will end up starving to death. If you start thinking from a darwinistic point of view, Survival of the fittest is absolutely true to it’s claim.

Get your ass out of the gutter, get out of the woodwork and start building your network. If you plan to be a hermit the rest of your life, then I really have no sympathy for you.

If you feel uptight in social situations, it is probably because you do not get out much, and rarely have any stimulating conversations. How do you alleviate this? Without needing a Sociology major to train you, all you really need to do is just get out. Go have some fun for once in a while. Forget that you are some information engineer or chess god and just get the fuck out to a bar or lounge!

Another great method, is thinking about how fine you will be when you break through your comfort zone. Paint a mental picture and think for a minute or more about the perfectly ideal situation.

Do you want to win at life? Communication is a key, and another possible step in the right direction is finding your local toastmasters or (this might be a controversial one,) but pickup artist lair. This is a group of people, who originally SUCKED at communication. Being with the right bunch of fellows discussing how to improve your communication not only helps you improve, but BANG! you instantly are creating friends, because of the commonalities and you all have been through the same shit! Now you got some cred!

Ok, getting the social end of it out, let’s talk about Networking and how this is necessary in the current economic hellhole we are in. Firstly, you are going to realize that in the real world, people will select their friends and acquaintances before any stranger. This occurs when it comes to jobs, social outings, events and other great decision points in your life. This is really because people who know you have a trust and feel that you would be a better fit through the experiences that have already been had.

How to build trust and network? Simple! Just visit networking events. Either a business one, social gathering or a party and just flat out talk to people. Do not worry about being polished, annoying or feeling out of place. If you feel that things are not meshing well, people are people and things just do flat out not work for possible reason. WE do not live in a perfect society here.

Just remember one thing, to cut your losses and politely move on. Remember, there are a ton of people in this world to get you to the places you want to go; Do not sweat and fret over just a couple of bad apples.
