Remembering the plan that I wanted to with Vegas in August, I originally wanted to go to the Stratosphere, per Shoemoney’s suggestion. No offense Shoemeister, but my friends were wondering “Why would I stay there with other options that might cater to me more.”

Ok, I obviously do not know the good ones at a reasonable cost. Many have recommended Caesars, Excalibur, Circus Circus, and a few others too. Ok so what to do?

Give me a comment and for the one comment that I like, I will give you a free copy of the Mighty WordPress Guide, valued at $30.

Peace Out!

As a veteran of the gambling biz (20 years selling slot machines), I’ve spent tons of time in Vegas. If you have a car, your best best is to stay off-Strip. Even thought it’s gotten a bit shabby in past years, I’ve always liked the Rio. The rooms are spacious, the casino has a great layout, and you don’t have to walk two miles to get to your vehicle. Make sure you ask to stay in the “old” (original) tower, which has the best accommodations. It’s also across the street from The Palms, which is a great place to people-watch. Lots of celebs stay there, which is why the room rates are so high. They have a nice Mexican restaurant on the main floor serving the best margaritas in town (if you like that sort of thing).

A surprise second choice is The Orleans, where the rooms are definitely the best in town for the money. The casino is basically one gigantic room, but noise levels are surprisingly moderate. If you’re planning to lie out by the pool, though, make sure you get there earlier in the day. Because of the position of the tower vis-a-vis the pool area, the sun gets blocked out in mid-afternoon. Stupid architects!

On the Strip, Mandalay Bay offers excellent value for money. Part of the reason is because the property is shared with a Four Seasons Hotel. New York New York is a fun place, but the rooms are noisy at night. Stay away from Excalibur, Circus-Circus and the Riviera, all of which are amazingly trashy. Luxor is a good choice, but only if you can get a room in the pyramid. A ride on the “inclinator” is almost worth the price of admission! Caesar’s is simply too big, the Bellagio is terribly overpriced, and Treasure Island is often overrun by families with their kids.

A couple of quick eatery suggestions while I’m at it. Paris has the best breakfast buffet in the city (too expensive on the weekends, though), and the Rio’s is also good. For fish and seafood in a non-casino atmosphere, check out The Tillerman on East Flamingo. There’s also a fantastic Persian restaurant in a strip mall on West Sahara, but I forget the name.
