When you run a huge promotion and have Oprah of all people let the world in on this promotion, expect crowds of people to show up out of nowhere.

There was though a slight problem with the logistics end in the name of coupon serving. The coupons were only distributed through a system that installed a file on your computer and would only allow you to print only a few coupons total.

The first problem was that for anybody who is computer illiterate and maybe some mac users, it was a complicated multi-step process. I could of figured it out, but I am not speaking for those who only know how to turn on and off a computer.

Secondly, there was a major qualm with the restaurants that were accepting these coupons. For example, in NYC there were restaurants that were not accepting coupons after a certain point or coupons that had a certain last four digit code. People were hugely disappointed for sure.

How could a big company along with a media diva pull off one of the biggest PR nightmares in promotional history?

In the name of customer tracking and data mining, they could of found a better way in the form of some browser based cookie that would of tracked their computer and ip against a list to make sure they got their information and kept the customer from getting too many coupons.

Yes, this is possible in PHP6, hire some competant programmers to build something. The next thing is, that there is not many people who know how to game the system with their computer. Yeah there will be a few “hackers” and “cybertheives” for sure, but there are measures to keep them at bay too without needing to have complex software installations either.

How will KFC repair their name in all of this? Maybe another promo should set the record straight for them?
