If you are in South Jersey, particularly the Millville/Vineland/Bridgeton area, you know that the Chinese Buffets in our area are extremely lacking.

I am of course not going to mention the names of the local buffets around here, but they have a LOT left to be desired. Matter in fact, most people I know who go to buffets in this area trek out to Palace Buffet in Turnersville or Sharon Zheng’s in English Creek.

Just a few days ago, the trend of pathetic buffets popping up in our area have possibly been halted, at least for now.

In the nicely redeveloped Glasstown Arts Section of Millville, a stretch of shops, art galleries and restaurants that line High street in Millville, A new chinese buffet has opened it’s door to the crowd of disenfranchised, grumpy buffet fans that just want to see one buffet make decent food and give great service.

No, it doesn’t have to be a super buffet that offers the whole world and sushi, but just a great place that is reasonable in cost, has great food and the owner and staff are grateful towards their customer base.

This place is called High Street Buffet. At 201 High Street, right in the middle of everything in the art district and an earshot of routes 47 and 49. Very easy to get to and tons of off-street parking as well!

The dishes are somewhat similar to what you would see at a mid-level chinese buffet. There are three bars, one for cold items and desserts, one for appetizers and soups, and the third for entrees and rice. Again, this is not the super buffets that have eight million items, but for $6 for lunch and around $10 for dinner, a reasonable deal for quality chinese food in downtown Millville.

Review:
Soup: I had mixed a couple of wontons with egg drop soup as I usually do and it tasted great. Perfect balance of sodium, egg and the wonton didn’t interfere at all besides just being a tasty wonton.

Appetizer: Grabbed a “sample” plate of different appetizers. I have noticed that the crab rangoons are made with a thicker dough, which is fine, but different in comparison to other buffets. One thing I have to give a ton of kudos for, is the Sesame balls with red bean paste. Most buffets I go to either do not have these or they seriously screw them up. The sesame balls were spot on with just the right amount of red bean paste. Wings were fine, Egg roll is thick and very cabbage heavy, but still tasty. I did not try out the sweet and sour chicken, as I had to save room for entrees so a second visit (and a dinner visit that is) will clarify the rest of the items.

Entrees: General Tso’s chicken was an eloquent balance of dark meat chicken and crispy coating with just the right levels in the sauce. The coconut chicken and Fried jalapeno chicken were new tastes for me, and they were not predictable but consistent in the construction. I did happen to notice that there was quite a few dishes with shrimp as a protein even including a recipe with shrimp and corn, now that was interesting but delicious!!! I also tried the pepper steak, beef and broccoli, and the fried rice (usual standard buffet fare) and consistency was a high mark in their book.

For dessert, usually is outsourced for most buffets around here. The cream puffs were fresh and had some pineapples as my appetite was not huge today.

My rating: Barely any kinks, and maybe in comparison to the other buffets in the area/county, just keep that consistency, that warm customer service and reputation, you will be busy no matter what as the food is great! When do you go to a chinese buffet and remember the tastes and cleanliness? Come to this one and be impressed. Third fridays will have a line outside the door, so get there early!!!
